Just to update, I have already a stall for our coming Flea Mart. The Stall Number is #35.

They are as follows:

Time: 1.30pm to 9.30pm

Venue: At arena in front of Blk 2 Holland Close
(opposite Holland Village Cold Storage: see picture below)

Directions to Get There
By Driving:Drive to Holland Ave, then turn into Holland Close & park at Multi-storey carpark Blk 5A
(there are lifts available, so please make sure to park at white lots at the very top).

By MRT:Take MRT to Bouna Vista & walk to Holland Close Blk 2

By Bus:Direct Bus Numbers: 48, 61, 95, 106, 970, NR8

Just to prepare the class 2 Crusaders for this Fund Raising event,
I will be showing you some pictures, showcasing the Fleamart previously held.

This is what the layout of the Flea Mart looks like.

Typical stalls looks like this.

Our stall will be near the stage/arena, but there is no guarantee that there will be shade. So please bring your caps and sun glasses and water to drink.

Many items on sale her include dresses, slacks, pants, jeans, blouses, toys, and many many stuff.

Depending on the state of the items, items can be sold from between $0.50 to a couple of dollars, or to even tens of dollars, as long as the price is right for the consumer to buy.

Many of the clientele are Filipinos and a number of foreign workers, some from Bangladesh and India, and some from Myanmar.

As usual, there will be Singaporeans, some of which are friends and relatives of the other stallholders. They can also be potential customers, as they may buy items to their fancy, if the price is right.

To Do List

As this activity is part and parcel of our effort to raise $$$ for our beneficiery under the GESS strategic plan, we will need your help to make this activity a meaningful and successful one:

1. Need Pictures to showcase this activity, as it will go into our school report.

2. Need all 2 Crusaders to bring as much as items as they can possibly hand carry, such as individually unwanted items that are in reasonably good and resale-able condition to the Flea Mart by 1:30pm 17 Jul 2011.

3. Need someone to come up with a simple display placard placed in front of table to showcase our activity:
- Letter by 2 Crusaders to raise funds for Xin Yuan Community Services (this letter is with Mr. Sea)
- Acknowledge with thanks BV CC for for their sponsorship of the stall for our activity
(Kendra, Weenie, Lilian - thanks for helping if you can)

4. Need Tin Can / Book to keep track of money raised.

5. The official time is from 1.30pm to 9.30pm. For safety, I suggest that ALL of us man the stalls from 1.30pm to 6.30pm (5 hours at the most). We can then have 2 shifts turns to man the stalls and have breaks in between.

6. All 2 Crusaders must be around to bring in and take back their items,

7. Most stalls will make up to $200 plus for one full-day of selling. For 2 Crusaders, we will do our best to raise whatever amounts we can and at the same time fulfil our CIP hours as a class.

Life's A Bitch

A grand wedding for 27 couples just entered the Guinness Book of Records - and it's for dogs.

I often wonder about man's fascination with dogs. True, a dog can be a friend, especially when all others fail you. But the extent to which some of us pamper our dogs is baffling.

Some put specially made Manchester United shirts over their dogs (which is irritating because I'm a Pool fan). Others have special combs and shampoos for them. Yet others buy them toys more expensive than the ones Mattel recalled.

Not that I'm against having dogs, or pets in general for that matter. Pets can give you a kind of sanity in a mad world like ours. However, "herofying" dogs like the new Hollywood cartoon show just doesn't sit well with me. Not every dog is a Lassie.

I once had a relationship with a pet dog too. As crude as it may sound, that bitch and I didn't work out.

Since then, it's always annoying to hear people referring to themselves as the dog's parents.

"Oooh, I miss you whole day, baby. Come to mummy!"

"See what daddy got you for dinner - the cat from next door!"

There's even this current pop song that's a tribute to the singer's dog who died. The lyrics go something like:

I remember you licking my hand / Then pass me the ball in your mouth / Ask me to go play with you / You like me fondling your ears / And hold you in me / No worries / Fantasising / Oh good dog, good dog.

Is that disgusting or what?

In all honesty, I used to like my dog quite a lot. But times were poor, and we couldn't afford to keep her. It didn't help that she wasn't toilet-trained. So off she went.

Then I heard the new owner also let her go shortly. And she became a stray. When I learnt about it, I cried the whole night. (I was in primary school, so crying was allowed.)

If that mushy song has been written 20 years ago, I would have related to it well. But not now. My heart is hardened.

Like all response to setbacks, man learns to build a defence mechanism against potential hurt. Man's best friend is experience.

Cars: Hybrid ! ?

I'm quite an idiot when it comes to many things, but I'm a complete moron when it comes to cars.

Take for example the fact that a normal car can sit only two or three persons side by side, but a bus can take four in a row plus more standing, yet both cars and buses occupy the same narrow lane on the road. Never really understood how that's possible.

So when a friend told me about hybrid cars, I went: hybrid what? You mean a car that's able to convert into a duck and swim? That's very clever.

Of course, the clever one wasn't me.

I was not done, because apparently I went on to ask even dumber questions. You see, a hybrid car or hybrid anything is completely new to me.

When I heard that it runs on electricity, I wondered: do you have to charge your car like how your charge your mobile phone?

If so, do you drive into a docking station? Insert a wire instead of a petrol pump into the side of the car?

When it runs out of power, does the car give out a warning beep in the dying seconds like Ultraman?

The first model was launched by Renault in 2003. Soon the Toyotas, Hondas and Peugeots of the world followed suit with their own. The last time I checked, prices of hybrids are already comparable with those of normal vehicles.

I went Wikipedia to search for more answers. It threw me technical terms like PHEV, RESS and ICE to further confuse me. Didn't quite help.

But it also tells me what I now already know: that a hybrid saves fuel and is set to become more popular around the world.

I find that I'm exactly back to where I started. In my fantasy world, a hybrid car is still a cross between man and machine who talks like the one in Knight Rider.

Nokia warns on battery overheating risks

HELSINKI - The world's top mobile phone maker Nokia said on Tuesday 46 million batteries used in its phones could overheat and the company would replace them at no cost to consumers.
Nokia said the Nokia-branded 'BL-5C' batteries were made by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co between December 2005 and November 2006.

Shares in Nokia dipped on the news and were 1.2 per cent lower at 22.35 euros by 0831 GMT.

'Matsushita will cover certain costs,' said Marianne Holmlund, spokeswoman for Nokia.
Matsushita said there had been a rare problem in the manufacturing process, noting the cost of it was still uncertain.
'We are still in discussion with Nokia about how to divide the replacement cost,' said Matsushita spokesman Akira Kadota.
'At this moment, we cannot calculate what the effect will be on earnings,' he said.
Nokia said 100 overheating cases of batteries in question have been recorded globally, but no serious injuries were reported.
'(The batteries) could potentially experience overheating initiated by a short circuit while charging, causing the battery to dislodge,' Nokia said in a statement.
Nokia said it issued a product advisory to consumers based on preliminary findings of an ongoing investigation and it hopes the warning would not hurt its brand.
'By reacting swiftly and responsibly, and by being fully transparent, we believe that consumers will continue to view Nokia as a responsible and trustworthy brand,' Robert Andersson, head of customer and market operations at Nokia told Reuters. -- REUTERS

Mr Big & Mr Small

I have been harbouring a secret for about five years now. Now that I'm likely to move out of my apartment soon, I feel compelled to share this secret.

I think my next-door neighbour is a freak. He weighs an incredible 180kg, and has a very beautiful Vietnamese wife. Let's call him Mr Big.

In the same house lives a handsome 60kg man, about the same age as Mr Big. I don't think he's married. Let's call him Mr Small.

Forgive me for thinking this way, but it just doesn't make sense for her to marry Mr Big if she has the choice of Mr Small.

But something else is wrong.

Never in the past five years have I seen Mr Big and Mr Small appear at the same time. I'd bump into EITHER Mr Big or Mr Small at the lift, never the both of them together.

And every time I speak to Mr Big in the morning on a certain topic, Mr Small would continue on that same topic with me in the evening.

Then it became clear to me: Mr Big and Mr Small are the same one person!

I've been puzzled for so long, and I'm pretty sure now. They speak with the same mannerism, drive the same van, and if I imagine Mr Big's face minus the fleshier portions, I get Mr Small.

That must be it!

How he manages to transform from one form into another, I don't know. Which one is his original self, I also can't tell. I suspect it's Mr Big, because he's the one with the beautiful wife.

Maybe someday before I leave, I should ask him directly.

Then again, maybe not. If he finds out that I know his secret, I don't know how he'll deal with me. All 180kg of him.

I guess some mysteries are meant to be unsolved.

2 Aug 07: Article #4: IBM Thinkpad 600 Shutdown Problem Resolved

I had this problem with my daughters' IBM Thinkpad 600 Pentium II notebook/laptop, which actually switches off by itself. There are no batteries connected, just a direct connection to the mains.

At the advice of my friend, I took the computer apart to see if there was any problems with the CPU fan and heat sink.

I could not find any anomaly. After I put all the screws back, the computer seemed to have rectified itself miraculously, and was back to normal.

After this I have no problem using the notebook to post this blog. Little things like this, really make my day.

I am just glad I sold of my investment in a property counter at a profit yesterday.

Today it is a bloodbath at SGX, with market capitalization having gone down 3.27%.

Maybe this is the correction at Q3 that they are anticipating.

If it is, it means buying opportunity of some equities at bargain prices.

Anyway it is true that share prices are really at an all time high, so like the saying goes, "What goes up , must come down".

My take is that there will always be opportunities to get shares of companies with good fundamentals.

Meanwhile, I will just enjoy the spoils of my labour.

I am rather happy as I have made some money today from my recent stock investment, thanks to a report made by Mah Bow Tan, which help to make me some small $ from a property counters.

Using the $, I went online to buy myself a pair of Timberland moccasins from ShoeBuy, which I discovered was cheaper if I were to buy them from USA, and deliver to Singapore using VPOST USA. This is because just like another online shoe company Zappos, they provide free delivery to USA. But upon comparing prices, I find that Shoebuy is slightly cheaper.

I also bought some good clone golf accessories and components from Hireko Golf for myself and my golf kaki. Another good place for buying branded golfing stuff cheap is this place called Rock Bottom Golf. I noticed that during some major golf events like the recent Masters, this website will have very good promotions like 13% off, or a dozen of re-furbished Titlest golf balls free for purchases above a certain value.
